How to opt out of Google Interest Based Advertising Program

Search engine giant Google has just announced that they would soon start their Interest Based Advertising program.

This would enable the company to display ads to web users based on their interests.

The company would look at the user’s YouTube history and the kind of sites he visit to connect him to various interest categories.

These would work on sites that run the Google advertising services like AdSense.

Google claims that this program is designed to make the advertising on the web more interesting.

However, privacy advocates say that the program would further reduce the privacy web users get on the web.

Google has however taken some steps to enable the user to opt out of this program.

You can tell Google to not show interest based ads to you while online surfing. These are the options:

Google Ads Preferences

This section enables you to see if Google has categorized your interests already. In case, you want to remain in the program, you can manually add categories that interests you.

You also get the option to opt out of the program altogether. Google also shows you the details of the cookie it has placed on your system.

Google Privacy Center

This section has the Opt Out button for you to get rid of the DoubleClick cookie.

Google Advertising Cookie Opt-Out Plugin

If you use Internet Explorer or Firefox web browsers, Google has made available plugins for you to install to opt out of the program.
