Cybersquatting still a major issue on the web
World Intellectual Property Organization has revealed that cybersquatting remains a major problem on the web.
WIPO revealed that they received a record number of complaints on cybersquatting last year.
They received 2,329 cases which is up eight percent from 2007.
majority of these cases were connected to English language domain names.
Dennis Rodman and Scarlett Johansson were some of the stars which were involved in these cases.
WIPO Deputy Director General Francis Gurry had this to say: “Cybersquatting remains a serious issue for trademark holders.”
Cybersquatting is basically when a party acquires a domain name with keywords which are owned by another party. The aim is to lure unsuspecting web users to their websites when they are trying to reach the official ones.
