Maruti 800 and Omni would be discontinued by 2015-16
Maruti has said that the tough emission norms would force them to discontinue their popular models like Maruti 800 and Omni in the coming years.
MSI Chairman R C Bhargava said in a statement: “Once Euro-IV emission norms is applied across the country, which is likely to happen around 2015-16, then M800 and Omni may not be a salable product. We will have to eventually phase (them) out then.”
The sales of Maruti 800 is also likely to suffer with the launch of the Tata Nano small car that is more spacious and contemporary compared to this practically vintage model on sale in India.
Tata Nano is also much cheaper compared to M800 as it would sell for around Rs. 1.25 lakhs for the base model.
Maruti has said that they are not going to lower the price of their cars to compete with Nano.
The company has also said that they are not going to upgrade the Maruti 800 or Omni model to meet the future emission norms. They already have the Alto model which now sells more than Maruti 800 in the Indian market.
