Microsoft promotes HP HDX 16t in its latest I’m a PC Ad

Microsoft has a new ad targeting Apple Macs. This latest advertisement features Sheila who is a self-described filmmaker.

Her budget is USD 2000 which is much higher compared to the individuals in the previous advertisements.

She is looking for a machine that can do video editing. This is a market which is usually dominated by Apple Macs which are known for their video editing capabilities.

Sheila checks out the Macs available under USD 2000 but is disappointed with the 2GB RAM specification.

In the end, she picks up a HP HDX 16t. Microsoft pays for the laptop and the ad ends.

The HP laptop comes with 4GB RAM. That would require her to use a 64bit edition of Windows Vista. Let’s hope HP is offering that machine with the appropriate version!

That’s fine, until she considers the cost of the software to edit the video on — and then what it requires to run it. Final Cut Pro (Mac only) will run fine on 2 GB. Avid, which is both platforms, is a lot more performance hungry, and is very finicky about what it will agree to run on at all. At the other end, the Mac comes with the perfectly serviceable iMovie, and GarageBand for her soundtrack editing needs. She would need to buy separate software to achieve this on a PC — and then struggle with compatibility issues.

This is really an own goal to Microsoft: the Mac doesn’t need more than 2GB to edit video, even pro video with lots of channels, because of the efficiency of its architecture, especially Quartz and Audio Units.

It’s a pity the subject of the ad didn’t ask more questions before she made her purchase.
