Even the Americans like to monitor their kid’s Internet time
A study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project has reported that even the liberal Americans are careful when dealing with their kids and the Internet. Most American parents prefer to set time limits to the computer time allotted to their kids. In fact, many try to monitor the general net usage by keeping computers at places where they are visible.
The report suggested that around 54% of the studied parents have some kind of filtering software installed on their machines to keep a track of net usage on the computer. This continues to happen in spite of the fact that kids today are becoming smart enough to clean their tracks and find overrides to these sort of utilities. This number has increased significantly from the study done way back in 2000 where 41% of parents were doing similar monitoring.
Interestingly, most of these parents are themselves heavy users of the net and studies suggested that the reason behind the control of usage by their kids seems to be getting more time to spend on the Internet. Normally, the experts believe the reason for such restrictions is to prevent access to objectionable content on the internet to their kids.
Parents continue to believe that restriction to the net should be taken in the same league as restricting television time and playtime. However, experts say that it really does not make a difference as kids continue to get access to online time in schools and other places.
However, the most interesting part of the study has to be the fact that 13% of American teens do not use the Internet at all.
