Sony Walkman powered by Google Android?

Market sources say that Sony could possibly launch a new range of Walkman portable media players powered by the Google Android operating system.

Sony Ericsson is already said to be considering Android for some of their upcoming smartphone models.

Using Android to develop a portable media player could give Sony the much needed boost in the market.

Google Android is flexible. Sony can integrate the Walkman experience on the Android platform. Plus, the device would be capable of more than just playing music or videos.

If Sony does it right, the device would have similar functionalities to the Apple iPod Touch… Like support for YouTube videos and of course Google Maps.

However, Sony has a bad reputation of messing up great things big time to make them terrible in the end.

They have to think outside the box and let the customer have some freedom. If they can do that, an Android powered Walkman branded media player could become a potent challenger to the iPod Touch.

Sony incidentally already has their Walkman X-Series which is aimed at the iPod Touch from Apple. But it has failed to make much news…
