Dual Core processors for mobile phones?

Mobile processor manufacturer ARM has said that they are aiming to start manufacturing dual core chips for mobile devices next year.

A company representative said: “You’ll definitely see handsets shipping with a dual-core A9 in 2010.”

Palm Pre comes powered with a processor based on the ARM Cortex A8 processor.

Apple is also said to be using an ARM based processor for their iPhone.

ARM said: “The A8 is just a single core while the A9 will be dual-core, all the way up to quad-core to give smartphones an even bigger performance boost.”

The company said that they are aiming to make these new processors more power efficient so they actually improve the battery life of the new generation of smartphones.

It would be cool to see new smartphone models getting powered by these multi-core processors just like our desktops today!
