Hackers tried stealing information from computers of California University

How much can we trust computers? Especially the ones connected to the Internet… this question might arise again after the latest news of hacking of computers in the California University. The incident took place three weeks ago when hackers got into the servers and got access to the names and Social Security Numbers of 59,000 people. All of these people are in someway or the other affiliated with the California University.

The spokesperson of the University has said in a statement that all the potentially affected users have been informed of this glitch, which might become the latest case of identity theft on the Internet. California State University Chico spokesperson Joe Wills said: “We still have no indication that the information was used for anything other than somebody wanting to have illegal access to this server. Typically, on a college campus that can be to download files, music and games. There is still no indication they were looking to take personal information.”

It took sometime before the hacking attempt was discovered by the network administrators of the universities. It was noticed during the routine monitoring of the network data flow when the tech people found that hackers installed software to store files on the system and tried to break into other computers.

This is not for the first time that such an incident has taken place in State Level Universities in the United States. Last year, hackers broke into the computer system of the University of California making information related to 380,000 members vulnerable to theft.
