Merrill Lynch: Apple close to iPhone deal in China

Merrill Lynch market analyst Cynthia Meng has stated in a research note that Apple is pretty close to signing up a deal with China Unicom to sell the iPhone in Chinese market.

The note said: “Our industry checks reveal that Unicom and Apple have most likely reached a deal for an exclusive 2-plus year agreement. We expect iPhone products to be available in conjunction with the Unicom commercial scale 3G launch in Q4, starting on Oct 1.”

If this deal is true, it would be great news for China Unicom which would get monopoly on this device for a period of two years.

China Unicom stated that they are still talking with Apple and nothing has been finalized yet.

China Mobile too has been involved in similar talks with Apple.

Apple iPhone might be a 2 year old product but it still is not available for sale officially in the world’s largest mobile market.
