European Commission: Internet censorship in China is unacceptable
European Commission has said in a statement that they believe that the Chinese government’s internet censorship attempts are unacceptable.
The commission said in a statement: “The aim of this internet filter, contrary to what Chinese authorities contend, is clearly to censor internet and limit freedom of expression. We therefore urge China to postpone the implementation of this mandate and request that a meeting is organised at technical level to better understand what is at stake.”
They are going to raise this issue at an upcoming event to be hosted by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in Beijing on July 9.
Chinese government has made it mandatory for all computers to be sold in the market to feature internet filtering software.
United States government has also expressed their disappointment at the new developments. USA claims that China might be violating the World Trade Organization obligations by its actions.
