Google Chrome OS would take years before it becomes a formidable challenger to Windows OS

Google recently announced their entry into the operating system market with Chrome OS.

This is not a conventional operating system considering it is focused on the web.

Instead of just providing access to web as one of the features, it is instead totally dependable on the web.

The base is going to be powered by Linux Kernel while Chrome web browser would provide the frontend.

It is clear that the operating system would require web connectivity as one of the essentials.

Google aims to release an early version by the end of the year. But computers running Chrome OS would only appear in the market next year.

That too is not sure considering none of the major PC manufacturers have openly embraced this new OS.

The Google branding is however enough to ensure that it would get a lot of media time. It is also pretty clear that a couple of companies would be lured into offering products powered by this platform.

Google Chrome OS is however far from challenging Windows in the operating system market. It is unlikely to feature support for running Windows applications.

It would require a change of mindset for anyone to switch to Chrome OS as their primary operating system.

Most of the applications if not all would be web based. It might become an option as a second device at home for most people.

But to replace Windows is a farfetched idea for most customers. This has been proved by the little popularity of Linux powered devices.
