Apple iPod Classic could soon be history

Apple has reported that the sales of regular iPods are declining as more people go for iPod Touch and iPhone models.

Market analyst Erica Ogg had this to say: “During the third quarter, Apple sold 10.2 million iPods, compared with 11 million a year ago. It turns out that the shifting appeal of the Shuffle, Nano, and Classic model iPods are to blame. But Apple apparently saw this coming.”

Apple has also admitted that they designed the iPod Touch because they expected traditional MP3 players to become unpopular with times.

Apple iPod Touch is much more than just a music player. It can run videos… It has a high quality web browser. And it can now run the same applications that are available for the iPhone. In fact, you can use it to make calls through VoIP provided you have a compatible headphone set.

All of these reasons meant that the earlier version of the iPod which is now sold as iPod Classic could soon be history.

It might survive the upcoming iPod Update that is expected for September… But in a year or two… Apple might just decide to discontinue it. IPod Nano and iPod Shuffle could still survive due to their small size.

By that time, Flash Memory could become cheap and large enough to replace the aging hard disk based iPod Classic.

you were proven wrong! There IS a market for those of us who want a large capacity player! Who cares if its ‘old’ or whatever, we don’t want stupid nanos or touches that don’t hold enough media. Let there be choice.

the next update could see 128GB iPod Touch. Perhaps that might make ipod classic redundant.
