Eric Schmidt resigns from Apple Board
Google and Apple have been partners on several projects for years now.
However, things have changed in the recent times. The two companies now compete in several important markets.
Google Android has become a big rival for the Apple iPhone platform. Google Chrome OS is going to become a challenger to Mac OS X next year.
Apple recently made headlines by blocking Google Voice based applications from their Apple App Store.
These new developments meant that Google CEO Eric Schmidt had to leave his seat on the Apple board.
He has been a member of the Apple board for almost three years now.
Schmidt had this to say on the new developments: “I have very much enjoyed my time on the Apple Board. It’s a fantastic company. But as Apple explained today we’ve agreed it makes sense for me to step down now.”
Steve Jobs said: “Eric has been an excellent Board member for Apple, investing his valuable time, talent, passion and wisdom to help make Apple successful. Unfortunately, as Google enters more of Apple’s core businesses, with Android and now Chrome OS, Eric’s effectiveness as an Apple Board member will be significantly diminished, since he will have to recuse himself from even larger portions of our meetings due to potential conflicts of interest. Therefore, we have mutually decided that now is the right time for Eric to resign his position on Apple’s Board.”
