Indian government wants disabled friendly cars available in the market
Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Arun Yadav has revealed that the Indian government has asked the automakers in the country to provide at least one or two models from their offerings customized for the disabled.
He said: “The government has been advising the car manufacturers to consider manufacturing at least one or two models of their cars suitable to be driven by the physically challenged persons.”
The government added that they are already offering special tax benefits on the cars designed for the physically challenged persons.
Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers has admitted that it is commercially unviable for automakers to develop such models as the demand is very low in the market.
Maruti once had a special edition of one of their small cars that was designed for the disabled. It was discontinued several years ago.
