General Motors launches the new Chevrolet Matiz

It looks closer than ever. GM has launched the model, which should land up next year in India as the Chevrolet Matiz (or Spark) at the Geneva Salon. It is quite different from the original Daewoo Matiz, which was a favorite amongst its owners in India. It would let GM enter the big volume segment of small cars in India as they struggle to sell large numbers of their relatively expensive models.

On the other hand, it would bring back the memories of the beloved Matiz to the Indian automobile lovers. It was made possible after General Motors took over Daewoo sometime back. The car however is based on the platform on which the original model was manufactured. The size is relatively similar though the front of the car has new outlook to give it a fresh outlook.

GM is offering the car in the competitive markets of Europe with two engine options in 800cc and 1000 cc model. However, India should get the 1-liter model considering the competition from Hyundai Santro, Maruti Zen/Wagon R is quite potent to this little beauty from GM. Impressively the engine range for Matiz is Euro-4 compliant, which means that the car is quite ready for the future pollution emission standards.

In fact, Daewoo cars were capable of passing the pollution norms of today when it was first launched in India way back in the 1990s. This tells the technological advancements Daewoo had but failed to capitalize in huge markets such as India. GM with all their financial assets and expertise in managing the corporations can make it big provided they can price the car right when it is launched in India!

I have bought a Matiz in 1999 and I thank god for taking the right decision. I ‘m writing this from Calcutta where parts and service is not at all a problem. And the car more than matches the lastest Hyundai Santro and TATA Indica versions on performance. I had in between upgraded my machine with a 1.4 litre ‘Kalos’ engine. It hurts when somebody compares a Matiz with a Maruti Zen or whatever Maruti stuff ….
So in a nutshell maybe a “Alfa Romeo 147 GTA”, “Volkswagen Golf GTI” or other hot hatches may be a better bet, but still I cannot comment on that till I check that out.

  27. samkutty | April 13th, 2006 at 12:24 am

Can we believe and depend GM that they will fulfill their promise of launching in India, the most beautiful small car in the world Matiz/Spark.How people can buy your other products when your earlier promises are on water. When you will also fly like Daewoo.

  28. Shail | April 20th, 2006 at 4:09 pm

GM has been hoodwinking us on the launch of Spark for more than 3 years now.

The latest rumour is that it will be launched in early 2007 and cost around 3 Lakhs only.

We sincerely hope that the company does not go bankrupt before delivery. And they keep their so called promise this time around.

The company is steadily losing its credibility amongst prospective buyers of Spark in India. This is their last chance or else I will never buy another GM product again.
