Net Neutrality: FCC launches OpenInternet.gov
US based web users and entrepreneurs have some good news from the Federal Communications Commission.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski delivered a speech which could very well become historic in nature.
He announced the establishment of OpenInternet.gov website with the concept of network neutrality.
He said that the aim of this project is to ensure the freeness and openness of the internet.
Genachowski said: “Broadband providers cannot discriminate against particular Internet content or applications. This means they cannot block or degrade lawful traffic over their networks, or pick winners by favouring some content or applications over others in the connection to subscribers’ homes. Nor can they disfavour an Internet service just because it competes with a similar service offered by that broadband provider. The Internet must continue to allow users to decide what content and applications succeed.”
This comes at a time when a lot of internet service providers are playing games with their customers by implementing policies that hamper their online experience.
This is also good news for companies like Google which operates massive bandwidth consuming sites like YouTube.
