RIAA might not pursue the cases against Internet2 offenders

The RIAA recently sued students of Universities of United States connected through the ultra modern Internet2 connectivity for illegal sharing of copyrighted content. This included filing lawsuits against 25 students of the University of Massachusetts and many other universities. However, latest news in is that the president of the association thinks that they would not be pursuing the court cases. The reason being the problem is spread on a larger scale and suing individuals would not solve it for them.

RIAA has decided not to name the students being sued for these activities. The president of the Recording Industry Association of America Cary Sherman notified the media that they have informed around 140 universities about these illegal activities going on their campuses. In his words: “Chances are we will not take further action against these particular infringements, but we’re reserving the right to do so. In any event, we will certainly take action against future infringements”

Internet2 was initially designed to help research projects in these universities and other fields, which require large amount of data transfer from one location to another. However, the high speeds meant that files as large as complete movies could transfer in a matter of few seconds. Normally, these activities took hours if not days.

The association claims that they have no issues with the technology as the general Internet user is accusing them off. Cary spoke about the technology in his statement: “We have no problem with Internet2. It is a neutral network that is capable of outstanding beneficial uses. It just happens to be being misused by some file-sharers who think it’s a convenient way to steal music”.
