Michael Griffin is new NASA chief

It is confirmed now. The choice of the White House has been selected to head the NASA in the coming years. The United States Senate has approved Michael Griffin to become the next NASA chief. The appointment was made swiftly considering the upcoming critical mission of the Space Shuttle launch for the first time since the Columbia disaster.

The voting took place a day ahead of the original scheduled meeting as per the Senate Commerce Committee co-chair’s request. The aim is to give the new chief as much time as possible at his position before the critical mission to space takes off. The shuttle had been grounded ever since the Columbia disintegrated while coming back to planet earth in 2003.

Space Shuttle is scheduled to take off from Cape Canaveral anytime between May 15 and June 3. However, the committee formed to make the Space Shuttle as safe as possible has yet to given its final go-ahead to the mission. Michael Griffin has himself said that his first priority as the head of NASA would be to make the Shuttle launch as safe as possible and keep it on until the retirement period of the Space Shuttle arrives.

He is also in favor of the reviewing of the decision taken by the ex-head of the NASA to not fix the Hubble Space Telescope. Michael thinks that now that the Space Shuttle is ready for Space again, NASA should launch a mission to space with astronauts to fix the telescope. NASA had earlier blamed lack of funds and the massive risk involved to reject such a mission to space.
