Intel announces volume shipments of Rosedale chip

While the world waits for Intel to release their 64bit and dual-core processors, the tech giant is busy launching a special kind of processor. With the world going wireless, it became a lucrative business to be in that market and for that Intel has just announced plans to launch their Wimax processors, its first chip for wireless technology.

Future seems to be exciting for the Wimax market as the world moves beyond the current generation of Wi-Fi products. The company also expects this chip to become a hit in the markets where broadband Internet access is still a distant dream due to logistical reasons. The technology however is not a guaranteed success as the telecom companies are still comprehensive about investing on a large scale in it.

The chip was codenamed Rosedale during the development process and is expected to cost around USD 45. It would be useful in powering devices running on Wimax signals in homes and offices. Many large tech companies including Siemens and Huawei Technologies of China have given their word that they would be developing products based on this technology.

The company is expected to begin with trials in various countries that includes India for various fields this technology can be applied on. The chip comes in a fully integrated pack containing a media access control component for the IEEE 802.16-2004 standard, a physical interface, an integrated 10/100-mbps Ethernet MAC for LAN connectivity, and a time-division multiplexing controller interface to support voice and streaming data.

Intel has expressed hope that soon the prices of the devices powered by these technology would reach affordable levels so that masses adopts Wimax as a common standard and wireless technology reaches the next level of technological advancement.
