Intel Dual Core Processor PCs Comes out in the Market
AMD seems to be missing the boat here. They were the first one to demonstrate a working prototype of a dual-core processor but it is Intel who has released the product in the market first. Alienware, Dell, and Velocity Micro have released their machines powered by Intel’s dual core processors. The machines are targeted towards gaming fans and individuals looking for high performance machines for resource intensive works.
Vice president of Intel’s Digital Home Group, Don MacDonald had this to say about this launch of the Intel powered machines: “With dual-core processor-based system availability, today is a historic date for the computer industry as PCs begin having ‘two brains’ instead of one. This milestone has additional significance for Intel given that it is the eve of the 40th anniversary of Moore’s Law. Moore’s Law is about giving you more computing capabilities without an equivalent increase in cost. This is what bringing dual-core processors to PCs is all about.”
The processor being powering these computers is the Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 running at 3.2 GHz along with the Intel 955X Express Chipset. These hardware are priced quite high at US$999 for the processor and US$50 for the chipset in 1,000-unit quantities.
Dual Core Processors are designed with two full execution cores within a single processor enabling simultaneous management of activities without raising the costs of the processor by much. Microprocessor companies are turning towards this technology after the traditional ways of making faster processors have almost reached their logistical limits.
