AMD’s Entry Level Dual Core Processors to Match Higher Model Pricing
The war between the two Microprocessors giants is becoming rather interesting as the time passes by. Intel obviously dominates the market though is being challenged progressively by the smaller company AMD. AMD beat Intel in the 64-bit processor field by launching their products first in the market. They also could have released their dual-core processors first but Intel changed their strategies and as a result, computers powered by Intel’s dual-core processors are already out in the market.
AMD now has only one way to counter Intel’s challenge in the Dual-Core processor market. Price their offering cheap enough to lure the customers away from Intel’s offerings. The processor being offered by the competition is the Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 running at 3.2 GHz along with the Intel 955X Express Chipset. This hardware is priced quite high at US$999 for the processor and US$50 for the chipset in 1,000-unit quantities.
AMD on their part have released information about their pricing of the upcoming chips from their stables. The Taiwan-based motherboard makers indicated that they would begin pricing its dual-core Opteron processors at the same level as its high-end single-core versions. According to Hector Ruiz, CEO, and Chairman of AMD, the company will launch the Opteron dual-core processors on April 21. The entry-level Opteron 865 processor will be priced at US$1,514, the same level as the high-end single-core Opteron 852, while the 870 will be priced at US$2,149 and the 875 will be priced at US$2,649, according to the motherboard makers.
