WiMax can be a boon for Developing Nations and Rural Areas

WiMax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is making news since last couple of days with Intel putting a lot of emphasis on the technology. They are being supported from many giants with some mobile operators already in the field implementing the technology. Even the critics believe that the technology has got the backing to make it successful. So what can it mean to the common person?

The company sees a bright future for the technology with immense application possibilities in a variety of fields. Intel also considers WiMax to become the successor to the legacy of the Wi-Fi technology. It makes immense sense for developing counties to adopt this standard for expanding the broadband connectivity to remote areas.

WiMax is under testing since quite sometime and the technology is expected to become a regular feature in the day to day usage in around 2 years time. The technology in theory is very exciting one with the capabilities of providing data rates of up to 70 mbps over distances of up to 50 km. practical usage would decrease the efficiency by quite a lot but it still is quite impressive by any standards.

It also is expected to compliment existing technologies like DSL and Cable Internet.
