Sony and Toshiba for next generation standard for DVDs

Entertainment giants Sony and Toshiba are considering developing a common standard for the next generation DVDs. The aim is to prevent an expensive battle over the common standards for the end consumer and get on the track as soon as possible. The consumer is the end sufferer with all the weird standards floating around making it complicated for him to choose which kind of a device to buy.

Both these companies are heading the two different groups of companies, which have been pursuing hard to make their choice of format the global standard. The possible settlement of the issue was announced through a statement from Sony, which said: “The two groups are in talks to jointly develop a new standard for next-generation DVDs to give the best benefit to consumers.”

Toshiba on their part have said that a common standard for the DVD would help the end consumer and the companies to go ahead and work on developing better products. A Japanese paper had reported yesterday that the two rivals were stepping up negotiations and will likely find a solution as early as this month.

Sony has since quite sometime along with Dell, Samsung, Phillips, and Matsushita were promoting their standards called the Blu-ray technology while Toshiba’s camp had a rival product offering in HD DVD. They are being supported by Sanyo and NEC.
