IBM to charge same price for software licenses for dual-core AMD systems
Critics are still out to decide whether a dual core processor powered computer count as one chip or two. AMD is making use of the opportunity to price their processors at a rather high price compared to the single core processors. While, the tech giant IBM is planning to charge the same price for software licenses for single-core and dual-core AMD systems. This is a major change in policy by International Business Machines Corporation.
AMD unveiled their dual-core processors yesterday and the first of the launched three processors are targeted towards server systems with four processors. They would be available for sale in the coming times through PC Manufacturers like Hewlett-Packard and Sun. HP is planning to launch ProLiant BL45p and DL585 systems powered by these AMD processors while Sun would be launching Fire V40z servers.
IBM on the other hand has committed itself to just one offering in eServer 326. It would come with dual-core Opteron and is aimed at technical demanding and high-performance computing users. The company has announced that with these systems powered by dual-core Opteron, customers will buy licenses for each processor, not each core. This would prove to be a real good option for the customers looking forward to buying these products.
