Sony Toshiba talks being supported by more tech companies
Finally, some sanity seems to be prevailing, which would end up benefiting the end customer in the entertainment field. The heads of the two groups of companies developing their separate standards of next generation DVD drives Sony and Toshiba decided to talk and settle on a common standard.
Better news is in store for us. More companies involved in this rivalry have joined the talks between these two tech giants to develop a standard for the DVDs. These include Matsushita’s Panasonic and Philips. However, industry analysts are still somewhat undecided upon the fate of the discussions. Experts say that the talks are in very early stages and it would take quite sometime before anything comes out of it.
Both the groups used a common base for developing their separate technologies (HD DVD and Blu-Ray) which are the blue lasers. These have a shorter wavelength than the red lasers used in current DVD equipment. This let the disks store more information than current generation CDs and DVDs. These new generation DVDs are expected to meet the needs for storing and delivering high-definition movies and television content to the customers in the coming times.
And the developers of the approved standard are expected to gain a lot through royalty money from the companies developing products using these technologies.
