Hubble Space Telescope celebrates its 15th Birthday
Today is the 15th anniversary of the famed Hubble Space Telescope. It has delivered more than 750,000 photographs of the outer space during its lifetime and has well proved that it has been worth it. However, the recent happenings at the NASA has somewhat jeopardized the future of this legend in its own right.
NASA had earlier announced that the latest budget assigned to it does not give it enough resources to prolong the life of the Hubble Space Telescope. However, the newly assigned chief of the space organization, Dr Mike Griffin plans to reconsider the decision made by NASA to let Hubble die in space.
Hubble Space Telescope was launched in the space on April 25, 1990 opening up a whole lot of possibilities for the scientific community. It was a joint effort of the NASA and the European Space Agency. It only got operational after three years of the launch due to some technical glitches, which required some correction by subsequent missions.
The telescope has been serviced for a longer life 4 times and a fifth mission would probably ensure that it would last until 2011.
