Dual Core Processors for the Mobile Computers
The battle is on between the two major rivals in the microprocessor market with both Intel and AMD coming out with their variants of the dual core processors. While Intel for the time being is focusing on the high power desktop machines, AMD is targeting server computers. Now, the next aim for these companies is to develop processors for the mobile computers.
Reports say that both the companies are currently busy developing these particular processors and have also informed their customers. A senior representative from Intel said in a statement: “The first Dual-Core mobile product Yonah will start shipping for revenue at the end of the year. It will launch in volume in 2006.”
This processor was also mentioned on the processor roadmap at the Intel Developer Forum conference in Taiwan earlier this month. The processor is expected to enter the retail market products sometime next year. It forms a part of the upcoming Napa mobile platform which includes core-logic chipset code-named Calistoga and a wireless LAN chip called Golan.
AMD on their part are also planning a dual core processor series for laptops. They are expected to power high-powered mobile computers developed to replace desktop PCs. A senior representative from the company had this to say about their upcoming products: “They will be true mobile processors. They will be introduced in 2006 within the mobile AMD Athlon 64 family and also in the Turion 64 family. The Turion is designed for thin and light notebooks.”
