Audi to make cars in India

German Automobile Giant Audi has plans to launch three of their best models in India. In addition, the parent company Volkswagen already has a solid presence through the highly appreciated in India, Skoda brand. Now, they are thinking of going one-step ahead. They announced their plans recently of establishing a passenger car assembly unit in the country. Currently the models being sold here are imported and attract a rather high import duty.

Audi AG’s country manager for India, Michael Weber said in a statement released to the media: “We’ve started operations in India by introducing our cars through the fully-built import route. In the second phase of our India plans, as volumes grow, we intend to have a local assembly operation in India”. He added while talking to the media personals while launching their premium segment model A6 in India: “It’s too early now to commit a timeframe on the investment plans but we are exploring the investment option. As volumes grow, we will look at the assembly option”.

The company expects to sell around 100 units of their luxury segment car in India this year. The growth target for the next five years is quite modest at 1000 vehicles. The next planned model from their stable is the very famous and lovable Audi TT Coupe. As reported earlier, A4 is already coming soon, which would counter the Mercedes C-Class heads on.

I think that audi for a change should try to exploit the small-size car segment in india and i wish that it comprises of a totally unique audi characteristics for example say a small car with a sun roof and a twin lights headlight which could give the small car a totally new refreshing look

Audi is a great brand. Although the population in India is hugh, the segment that can buy and use lies in the main cities where traffic jams are getting worse. Audi should come in with a Mid-size car range and target corporate employees as customers. This will significantly boost numbers.
