Cabir spreads to 20 countries
Mobile viruses have now made appearance in 20 countries around the world. Cabir made news for being one of the first popular viruses for the mobile devices. Antivirus company F-Secure reported the news with the following statement: “”The Cabir virus has now been detected in 20 different countries… including in the US, China and Russia. We found the virus in Luxembourg two days ago and in the Netherlands two weeks ago.”
It was first discovered in the month of June last year. It uses Bluetooth connectivity to find vulnerable mobile devices in the surrounding and passes itself over. Mikko Hyppoenen, head of anti-virus research F-Secure said: “Once you have one infected phone, it will try to beam itself to other compatible phones… This virus is only traveling when people travel the worldâ€.
The virus however is not as easy to spread as PC based viruses. The potential victim has to accept a connection from the already infected device and than accept a file and run it. Even with this low probability, the virus has managed to spread quite rapidly. Experts blame it on the ignorance of the end user who gets lured by invitations to download and run files pretending to be wallpapers and screensavers.
The good thing about Cabir is that it does not do much harm to the infected device other than draining its battery and becoming a nuisance. It still manages to take the crown of the number 1 virus for mobile devices in the world.
