Bluetooth to converge with Ultra-Wideband Technologies

Representatives of the vendors of Bluetooth wireless products have decided to collaborate with ultra-wideband (UWB) vendors to develop technologies making use of the advancements in both the fields. Details are not out yet but the official word until now is that the two groups would join hands to combine strengths of both technologies.

The collaboration would be working with the goal of developing an architecture that allows devices to take advantage of UWB data rates. Bluetooth will still be important to maintain backward compatibility with existing devices available in the market and future products not requiring the higher data rates.

Michael Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG said to the media: “I feel that it is the responsibility of the industry to recognize synergies and limit fragmentation as much as possible. Joint development between Bluetooth technology and UWB is the fastest and most economical pathway for both technologies to meet the future demands of companies and end users.”

Experts working for Intel have applauded this move, as they are a major player in the Bluetooth market. Even Motorola dropped in a comment with their support for this move.
