Research in Motion Blackberry beats PalmOne
The developers of the Blackberry handheld device Research in Motion have overtaken PalmOne Inc. to become the number 1 supplier in the handheld computer market. The results are from the first three months of the current year. PalmOne has held their position at the top of the league for many years now.
Blackberry has been massive successful in the enterprise sector. In the recent times, PalmOne has started to concentrate on the nascent smart-phone market with its Treo range of products. This helped RIM to come up with better products in the handheld computing market. Todd Kort, analyst for Gartner Inc. said in statement to the media: “They have quite a few older models on the market and would like you to upgrade to a smart phone. They’ve abdicated they’re position in PDAs in order to try to become a more successful smart-phone vendor. They just don’t have the resources to try to fight battles on two fronts.”
This lack of sales of their PDA’s has led to downfall of their market share from 30.5% to 18%. They sold just 614,750 units in the first three months of the current year compared to 834,591 units a year ago. RIM on the other hand managed to increase their sales by as much as 75.6% by selling 711,000 units compared to just 405,000 units in the same period a year ago. Their current market share stands at 14.8%.
RIM blackberry is incredibly popular in the enterprise sector considering it helps the corporates stay connected to their mail servers back in the office on the move. They are also making a move in the sales sector where the sales people are using blackberry to stay connected to the central servers to stay updated with inventory and other details.
