Toshiba says Unified DVD Format with Sony complex

A senior representative of the Toshiba Corporation has reportedly said in a statement that development of a unified DVD standard in collaboration with Entertainment giant Sony would be complex at this stage. Toshiba on their own have been pursuing the HD-DVD format for the next generation DVDs.

However, they recently went into talks with the companies developing a rival standard in Blu-Ray like Sony and Matsushita Electric Industrial Company. They were discussing ways to integrate both their technologies for a common standard for the interest of the end consumer who is stuck between the two standards. The problem arose because the fundamental structures of the rival discs are very different leading to technical issues in unification of the standards.

Toshiba at one stage were looking to be more cooperative when they said that they would adopt Sony’s standard if they can prove that their method of storing data is more efficient compared to Toshiba’s. However, Sony has apparently failed to come forward with enough evidence to satisfy Toshiba representatives.

Toshiba is still open to talks but believes that further discussions at this stage are fruitless with Sony not ready to accept that Toshiba’s technology might be the way to go for the common standard.
