Google initiates Portal Formation

One thing Google lacks when compared to both MSN and Yahoo! is a full-fledged portal. Google is primarily a search engine with a basic search page as its trademark. On the other hand, Yahoo! and MSN are complete portals with searching as one of the options. This enables them to have a bigger user base from a whole lot of services they offer besides searching.

However, Google is changing. It is aiming to complete this missing piece in their success story by initiating a personalized Google Home Page. They are enabling the users to add customized content to their Google search page to start giving it a portal like outlook.

It enables the user to put on GMail and Google News on the homepage of the Google Search along with many other famous news and content sources. Currently these services include high profile names as The New York Times, BBC and of course the Slashdot. In addition, there are sections for weather and movie highlights depending upon the zip code of the user.

The service is currently available from the famed Google Labs from where some of the most exciting Google services have emerged over the years. The company is also expected to allow the users to add their own custom feeds on this personal Google Page in the near future. A senior representative of the company said: “While this is just the first step in what we hope it will become, we believe it is a very compelling offering.”
