Google’s efforts with Personalized Homepage
Google normally does not tend to do what has been already achieved. However, this latest news is somewhat aimed at the Yahoo! and MSN web portals. Especially the personalized versions of these services, which let user, decided what he want to see on loading these sections. For this, Google has for now picked up best of the content channels from the web.
These content providers include The New York Times, BBC News, Wired News, and Slashdot. In addition to that, Google also provide the facility to display data from their Google News web service and recent mails from GMail. Other than that, US based customers can also check for the weather and movie timing updates from here.
This is the first project to have emerged out of their internal Fusion project. They aim to help users explore the Internet and bring together the various services offered by the search engine giant. The service is currently in beta stage and is expected to grow to include more offerings in the form of user’s choice of content sources.
Google has said in the past that it does not exactly want to become a web portal but with this move they are somewhat going the same way. The basic plan remains to help the user to explore the web in a more convenient way. The company said in a statement: “Google users have told us they’d like a way to view more of the information they want in a single place. The personalized homepage is the first of a number of approaches we’re exploring to make personalized information more accessible and useful.”
