Apple recalling iBook and PowerBook Batteries on security hazard issue
Apple along with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling batteries powering some models of the Apple iBook and Apple PowerBooks. Reason being the company has found out defects, which could lead to overheating of the batteries and might result in a fire hazard. Estimates say that around 128,000 units in the United States alone are affected by this defect.
The batteries have been manufactured by the LG Chem Ltd. of South Korea and assembled in Taiwan and China and the company already has received six reports related to these defects. The company released a statement: “Our first concern is for the safety of our customers. However, we do not expect the cost of the recall to be material to Apple, and our supplier will bear those costs.”
The model numbers affected by these defected batteries are A1061, A1078, A1079, and serial numbers beginning with HQ441 through HQ507 or 3X446 through 3X510. The company is advising the customers to remove the batteries from the compartments and check for these labels to find out if they are due for the replacement or not.
The company is available via the number 1-800-275-2273 or customers can visit them at http://www.apple.com/support/batteryexchange

One would think that since the last PowerBook battery recall Apple would have stopped using LG Chem for manufacturing their batteries…
