Google’s tryst with Web Portal

Google happens to be one of the most visited webpage in the world. In addition, it happens to be one of the most basic webpages around as well. All you get is a logo, a search box and few extra options. There is so much prime space available that any company would be ready to pay a fortune to be advertised there. There comes the concept of a web portal.

Yahoo! and MSN both are generally portals with searching as one of the major options. They offer many more services, which allow them to provide an integrated webpage with all the services and options around. This further enables them to place advertisements on the portal pages earning them huge revenues considering they get huge targeted audience.

Now Google seems to be going the same way. The recently launched personalization facility enables the user to add custom news and other content sources to the Google’s homepage under the search box. Users for now cannot add their own preferred sources but this feature is expected in the future. Advertisements are not there again, but Google has not denied that they will not be placing their advertisement modules on these pages.

Analysts are calling this the portalization of the Google Search Engine. And this product from the Google’s Fusion Factory seems to have far fetched effects on the competition in the form of Microsoft and Yahoo! Google’s co-founder Eric E. Schmidt himself spoke about this new innovation: “It turns out that people really want a personalized Google. They want Google, but they want it to be their Google.”

The company believes that the fusion technology would become the central focus of the company’s future products.
