PalmOne has enough in its arsenal to take on Apple iPod

Research in Motion somewhat shocked the analysts when it took over the PDA crown overthrowing old leader in the segment PalmOne. However, the leader is back with a bang and now has PalmOne LifeDrive for the prospective customers. This new handheld comes with a built-in hard drive which makes it possible to put in a lot of content than ever before.

The company from the Milpitas in California is a pioneer in manufacturing electronic devices used as Personal Information Managers and this latest device follows in the footsteps of their Treo range of PDAs. PalmOne considers “LifeDrive” as a new breed of personal digital assistant and the first one to offer storage in the form of a hard drive.

PalmOne is pricing the device at USD 499 and LifeDrive would be coming with a 4GB disk included in the package. The PDA comes with a large color screen (320-pixel-by-480-pixel) and matches the size of normally available devices in the market.

The higher capacity means that users would now be able to carry their music, documents, photos, and even videos with them on the road enabling them to use the device as much more than just a PDA. In fact, a 4 GB capacity enables the device to act as a proper MP3 Player when not being used for other purposes effectively negating the need for a separate digital music player especially the very hip and popular Apple iPod.

The device even offer wireless connectivity to the web through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth technology and offers support for Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF files.
