Advanced Micro Devices extends their Geode Line of processors

AMD continues to exert pressure on the microprocessor giant Intel as they just launched a new dual-chip processor to add to their impressive lineup of low-power embedded processors. They call this particular chip Geode LX 800@0.9W processor and it is based on the x86 architecture and optimized to be used on devices like mobile phones and other handheld devices.

The company is very excited about this project as it has vast usage in various fields. A senior representative of the company told the media about this product: “It gives great performance at a lot less power and heat. As x86 devices get more powerful and more efficient, they can get smaller and still take advantage of some of the tens of thousands of applications already written. Designers are challenged to add new features to differentiate themselves and their products in a very fast-moving, competitive environment. If you use x86 technology in smaller devices, you don’t have to write new applications and operating systems.”

The standard architecture based on x86 platform means that the devices powered by this processor can be used to run full Windows applications. The chip on the processor is capable of speeds of 500 megahertz though it runs comparably to products in the 800 range. The processor consumes just 0.9-watt power enabling it to generate less heat and as a result, the system remains cool and would result in longer life of the application.

The processor also comes with an integrated high-definition CRT/LCD controller negating the need for manufacturers to add another piece of silicon to their boards in order to drive display monitors. Overall, it looks like an interesting product for the manufacturers of devices who can fully utilize the facilities provided by this new processor.
