WSJ says Apple in talks with Intel for collaboration

Now, this news is very interesting and can have far-reaching effects on how the personal computing market shapes up in the near future. Wall Street Journal has reportedly said that the Macintosh maker Apple are currently in talks with the microprocessor giant Intel for a possible collaboration.

The collaboration is supposed to look for a possible situation where Apple can use the chips produced by Intel for their range of Apple computers. The news report quotes two industry executives about recent discussions between the companies. They claim that Apple would agree to use the processors made by Intel.

On the other hand, this might be just another tactic by the company to put some pressure on their current chip supplier IBM to fulfill certain business conditions. Intel has for now declined to comment on this rumor currently floating in the market. Apple called this news nothing but a piece of rumor and speculation.

However, if indeed Apple decides to use Intel products, it might result in cheaper Macintosh computers considering the vast scale manufacturing strength of the Intel. They can provide massive subsidies and price advantage to Apple enabling them to price their systems competitively to challenge companies like Dell and HP for desktop computers.

Analysts says that the move would be a major policy change for the iPod maker as they have for long ignored the possibility of using the processors from either Intel or AMD. If indeed, this happens… it would be a major blow for IBM as a processor developer considering apple is one of their biggest customers and they are looking good after a long time to give Intel a run for their money in the desktop computer market with their cheap offering in iMac and Mac Mini.

In addition, if Apple starts to use Intel for their computers, it will not be long that iPod starts coming powered by their chips as well. And iPod is a best seller in the digital music player market. IBM would not certainly like that…
