Intel launches Intel Pentium D processor for home computers
Intel have reignited the flames in the Dual Processor segment by launching a brand new processor codenamed Pentium D. This is the first mainline chip from the world’s largest manufacturer of computer chips targeted at the desktop segment. And the company is aiming big with plans to sell millions of units within this year itself. News, which would come as a rude shock to their competitors in AMD.
These dual processor chips are aimed at consumers looking at improved multitasking environment and better performance. In fact, many applications today are programmed to take advantage of these special processors. The company has already planned their shipping schedule as the vice president of Intel’s Digital Home Group, Gerald Holzhammer said in a statement: “We’re shipping 100,000 this quarter, and we’re going to ship millions by the end of the year. This is a big deal for us. It’s the first time dual core will make a real impact on the marketplace.”
Intel would now try to get the Computer Manufacturers to supply other technologies in the computers aimed to complete their vision of the “digital home” platform. This includes hardware to improve graphics, sound, storage and security capabilities. The company is increasingly looking beyond just the processor, which they started with the Centrino Package for the laptops. Something similar might be planned for the desktop computers as well.
The company launched their dual core processors sometime back but were initially aimed at the PC enthusiasts and gamers. The high performance chips were priced at a high cost thus limiting their appeal to the general consumer. Pentium D is expected to be priced competitively as the company looks forward to capture a bulk of the market share in the beginning itself. Their competitor AMD is expected to launch their Desktop variant of the dual core processor sometime next month.

theres always a next big thing after a couple of months. no big deal.its natural to launch new products. and by the capacity it dosent seem to appeal me so much. i think this is just marketing.make it really cheap then it wud be successful but technologically,i dont think so.
