Volkswagen to launch Fox in India

Indian customers are in for a treat. Just days after they get to see the marvelous Suzuki Swift arriving in the showrooms with mouth-watering prices, the news of Volkswagen entering the Indian market with the 2 Box Fox drops in. The market of premium hatchback is already crowded with models like Fiat Palio, Tata Indica, Hyundai Getz, and now Maruti Suzuki Swift.

However, the company is hopeful of making its mark in this segment with their Fox model. The car would mark the launch of the famed German marquee in the country officially. The company already exists here in the form of Skoda and Audi brands of automobiles.

Volkswagen has already tried entering the Indian market three times before but somehow the plans were shelved all the times. This time the opportunities are exciting and the timing is perfect. The economy is booming, the auto sales are at a high and the consumer is looking out for exciting products from the global automakers.

VW has confirmed plans to open up a manufacturing plant in the city of Visakhapatnam. They are also nearing the closing of a deal with the government through which they would be acquiring around 350 acres of land for this plant. Fox is slated to enter the Indian market sometime next year and in the later days, the company is expected to launch commercial vehicles. A team of representatives from the company recently visited the country for the same purpose.

The Fox is no premium hatchback. It’ll be unfortunate if Volkswagen expects Fox to compete with Getz, Swift etc. Fox will do well a level below the premium hatchback segment. If VW is to give a good first impression in India, it must launch the Golf.
