Server Market tie between Windows and Unix in terms of revenues
The market for the servers grew by 5.3% in the first quarter. It now stands at an impressive USD 12.1 Billion. However, for the first time, the revenues from the Unix servers tied with the revenues earned by the Windows platform based servers. This report was released by IDC last week.
Windows based servers show an increase of 12.3% revenues to touch a market cap of USD 4.2 Billion. The growth in the number of units shipped was around 10.7%. in comparison, Unix based servers grew at a less impressive 2.8% to touch similar revenue scales. The unit sales increased by around 5%.
These latest results show that the windows based servers are gaining traction in the enterprise server space. The growth was noticed for the eighth consecutive time confirming that the corporates are still investing in network infrastructure.
The overall growth has however slowed down. The total unit shipment growth of 13.5% is the lowest in the last 2 years. IBM lead the market share with Hewlett-Packard coming in second closing the gap quite a bit.
