AMD to unveil their Desktop Dual Processors today
Finally, the day has arrived when AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) would be unveiling their range of Dual-Core Processors for the desktop market. The event will take place at Taiwan and manufacturers of Personal Computers like HP, Acer, and Lenovo Group would be discussing on plans to launch computers based on these latest processors.
The news comes just days after Intel launched their Intel Pentium D range of Dual Core processors for the desktop computers and workstations. Today, AMD is expected to challenge that processor with the launch of four dual-core Athlon 64 X2 processors–the 4800+, the 4600+, the 4400+ and the 4200+.
These Dual Core processors come with two separate processing cores capable of better performances with less power consumption and heat release. These processors are also expected to beat the performance of computers containing two single-core processors, which are pretty common these days. They come with added benefits of lower costs and maintenance.
The processors however would come at a price. The 4800+ is expected to sell for $1,001 in quantities of 1,000 while the 4600+ will go for $803. In comparison, Pentium D chips from Intel would be selling for between $241 and $530 in 1,000-unit quantities. AMD for a change is charging premium for superior technology and better performance. However, we would have to see how the market reacts to these latest offerings from the 2 giants of the Microprocessor industry!
