AMD launches their Dual-Core Athlon 64 X2 processors
AMD has sparked the Dual Core Processor market with their launch of the dual-core Athlon 64 processors at the Computex trade show in Taipei on Tuesday. Market leader Intel just last week launched their versions in the form of Intel Pentium D at competitive prices. AMD’s processors however will not come cheap but offers technological superiority over their competition.
These new processors come with two processors on a single piece of silicon and would mark a new advancement in the PC Computing architecture. These new chips offer better performance and less power consumption and heat dissipation. Major difference would be noticeable in resource intensive tasks requiring multi-tasking abilities. However, it would require softwares to support this technology to let users take advantage of these new speeds.
Microsoft is already ready with their Operating System Windows XP to take advantage of these new processors and the software vendors are expected to do the same by releasing updates to their existing offerings. AMD’s representative Dirk Meyer spoke about these latest processors: “[Consumer] will benefit dramatically and qualitatively with multi-core”.
Interestingly, AMD’s offerings would be already supported by current generation motherboards developed for the single-core Athlon 64 chip with a BIOS upgrade. This would make it cheaper and easier for the corporates and users to upgrade their computers. PC Makers like Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo Group, Acer, Iwill, and Shuttle are already ready with their products offering these new processors.
