Toyota Prius faces U.S. regulators investigation

Toyota is for most of the time is in limelight with their hybrid vehicle Prius. However, the latest news is somewhat disappointing for the company. The U.S. regulators have decided to open up investigations in to the company’s big selling model after receiving complaints about the car.

They received a total of 33 complaints of engine stalling in 2004-05 when the car is driven at highway speed. However, none of the complainant reported any injury or loss of life. The report from the NHTSA stated: “All complainants reported that the engine shut down suddenly without warning and at least 50 percent of the complainants (said) that when the engine shut off, the vehicle would not restart and had to be towed”.

The bad publicity is not good news for the Japanese motor giant, which just reported an increased sales report while the American Auto Giants showed a decline. The car combines the power of an electric engine along with a traditional gasoline engine to give better mileage without compromising on engine power.

They would be investigating both the 2004 and 2005 models. The company reported that they sold more than 9000 Prius in the month of May and the model accounted for almost 64% of all the hybrid registrations last year. The company has promised full cooperation with the investigations.

these stories are amazing 33 cars out of how many ??? GM just recalled 2 million cars and trucks and FORD has trucks that are burning down peoples homes … This story is not going to stop people from buying Toyota or The PRIUS– These stories are sad ! And show that The Big three have power over the media and the Big three don’t want to change > They want to build the gas hogs and want us to keep on buying them > But Americans are getting sick of the teckless and the fuel hog cars made here.

I have a 2004 Toyota Prius which died and had to be towed to the dealer, Brown’s Toyota, Glen Burnie Maryland which did not know the problem and fail’s to admit the recall would not allow the engine to restart. I feel I was charged for work not needed.
