Seagate launches hard drives based on perpendicular recording technology

The data storage companies are now aiming to increase storage capacities by using newer technologies like the recently announced perpendicular recording technology. Seagate has now unveiled 10 new hard disks, which includes the first hard drive in the world to use this technology. The company would be marketing these drives under the popular Barracuda and Momentus brands.

These new range of drives also include an internal drive designed for the automotive industry, another 8GB 1-inch drive for portable media players and a 500GB capacity disc drive for home entertainment systems. This 500 GB disk drive comes with the capacities of storing as much as 85 hours of high-definition TV for home users.

Seagate’s first drive featuring perpendicular recording technology comes in capacities of 160GB and they are for the time being developed for notebooks. The company would be releasing products based on this technology for the other devices in the future as well. This technology let the storage companies store double the capacities within the same area. This should become a norm in the future as the demand for high capacity storage disks increases.

The company expects to start shipping these drives in the retail market this summer and they would be moving on to this technology for most of their drives by next year.
