Reports say IBM had no idea about Apple’s switch to Intel

Everyone knows how secretive Apple is about their way of working. No one normally has a clue on what they are working on and when they would release it. And if someone manages to leak out information, Apple sues them badly. Interestingly, Apple seems to have taken no action yet against Wall Street Journal, which apparently leaked the story about their switch to Intel for their processor requirement.

Another interesting point being made in the media about this event is the fact that IBM is said to have no idea about the deal until the very last moment. They were the people affected mostly by this deal and looks like Apple gave them a shock as well. Apple would be moving onto Intel processors from next year with the complete switchover destined in 2007. New York Times has reported, IBM was as unaware about this news as were the rest of the world.

This news is more surprising when we look at the fact that Steve Jobs claimed that they were planning for the transition since the last couple of years with most of the recent releases already somewhat compatible with Intel Processors.

The article from the New York Times said: “Several executives close to the last-minute dealings between Apple and I.B.M. said that Mr. Jobs waited until the last moment – 3 p.m. on Friday, June 4 – to inform Big Blue. Those executives said that I.B.M. had learned about Apple’s negotiations with Intel from news reports and that Apple had not returned phone calls in recent weeks.”

Now, we sincerely think that Apple should be a little more open with their business partners. They were also reported to have conflicts over their policy of secrecy with Motorola along with they are developing mobile phones compatible with iTunes Music Store.

IBM should occasionally read the news if they were caught by surprise about this. That’s just dumb. More than a year ago I read that Macs were being run on Intels for testing purposes.
You write, “Now, we sincerely think that Apple should be a little more open with their business partners.” – but think about it, Who are you and what do you know? It could be that IBM was misrepresenting what they would and could do for Apple and stringing them on. Perhaps IBM wasn’t the best partner either – ?? IBM and Apple will both be fine. Controversy should be expected and welcomed from Apple. It gives you something to have an opinion about – although your naivete about business is a little scary.
