Michael Griffin starts taking hard decisions at NASA
The new boss of NASA has started doing the hard part of the job. Firing people he considers not fit for the job. the latest reports in says that Michael Griffin has decided to oust as many as 20 NASA officials after the crucial mission of the launch of Space Shuttle takes place in July. NASA is currently under heavy pressure to ensure the safety of the first ever Space Shuttle mission in many years.
The reasons behind these expected firing is that Griffin wants a more scientific team at the controls of NASA instead of a political one. And with the space agency passing through tough times and having rather ambitious aims in the coming future, these steps are more than necessary. President Bush wants NASA to send human back to the Moon and eventually to the Mars by 2020. Worse, the Space Shuttle is due to retire in 5 years time.
Washington Post reported this breaking news in their Saturday’s edition newspaper. And the people being considered for sacking are expected to be informed about this coming Monday. The spokesperson for the NASA boss said about these rumors that these kinds of changes are not unusual as every leader wants to shape his own team to achieve his own goals. And Michael Griffin looks like a great guy to be on the top of NASA’s administration during these tough times.
NASA is a fraud and should be abolished save for astronomy and weather work. Travel in space is hooey and a money pit.
Space should not be controlled by private industry beacuse space is not a commoditty, therefore it should belong to everyone. If we start to privitize space travel, we will have wars in space. Just like in the mercantlist age(fought over gold) and the modern age(oil).
Travel in space is another great adventure, well worth our time and money. A (very) reformed NASA could be a tremendous asset in this endeavor.
After provding national leadership on Earth observation technology and applications for more than three decades, NASA seems to have lost its commitment and initiative in this critical area, shifting much responsibility to less appropriate and capable agencies like NOAA and DOD. Human activities now affect the Earth system on a global scale, as is increasingly evident through loss of biodiversity and climate change. Such changes have have potentially major negative consequences for our social and economic systems and must be adequately addressed now, not in the future. Improving knowledge and understanding of our home planet should be priority #1 for NASA. Mars is intellectually interesting and challenging, but Earth sciences should be higher on the agenda and receive a greater share of the funding. NASA now shows an opposite trend.
