The morality of using .xxx domain name
ICANN has finally given its approval for the usage of the .xxx domain extension for the adult industry on the Internet. One of the aims behind this task is to make it simple for filtering software to block access to pornographic material available on the net for kids. If .xxx based domain names would indeed manage to do that is something many critics have big doubts upon.
First reason is the high price of this new genre of domain names. At USD 60, it is around 7-8 times more expensive than routine domains. Their seems to be no logical reasoning behind why would someone spend this much money to get a domain registered with .xxx extension when it comes with no special incentive.
Another reason is the way the Internet works… Most of the big networks providing such content would be more than just a few months old. They would have already invested quite a lot of resources in getting these sites popularized through advertisements and media promotion. In addition, the content indexed by the search engines would be connected to their current domain names. Moving over to a completely new identity on the web would not be such a lucrative task for them.
However, some experts believe that there are some benefits of moving on to these domains. Websites using .xxx based domains would have the extra advantage of protecting themselves from suits pertaining to tricking children into viewing pornography. Though, the sites would still have to follow certain guidelines yet to be released by the authorized agencies limiting actions like trickery through spamming and malicious scripts.
Whether this step indeed helps in controlling access to adult material to kids, we would come to know only after a couple of months.
