British Telecom launches BT Fusion

British Telecom has renewed their attempts to get back at the mobile operators who have been since a long time taking their user base away. They have launched a telephone handset, which works on both mobile and fixed line connections. The instrument will convert from a mobile phone to a cordless handset as soon as the customer enters his home offering the best of both scenarios.

They call the mechanism BT Fusion and it works through a home broadband hub that automatically switches a mobile handset enabled with Bluetooth technology to a fixed line technology when the caller is in range. The calls to this device would be charged at mobile rates though.

British Telecom has been working on such product for quite sometime now. In fact, they were due to launch it April 2004 but it got delayed due to technical difficulties. The BT Fusion package includes a mobile handset and home broadband hub that doubles as a wireless internet point for home computers and notebooks.

The company would be initially testing this service with a 400 customer base and would launch it widely later this year. The chief executive of BT Retail, Ian Livingston said in a statement to the press: “We know that many of our customers enjoy the convenience of their mobile phones when they’re out and about, but switch to using a landline phone when they arrive back home to save money or because they have little or no mobile coverage”.
